        Magazine Printing Tips

Choose the right binding for your budget.
If you have a tight budget and under 60 pages, then saddle stitch or staple binding is cheaper than perfect binding.
Ensure a Strong Spine for Perfect Bound Magazines.
For perfect bound magazines, a spine width of at least 3mm will ensure adequate glue coverage for a secure end result.
        Upgrade Your Cover
We recommend a cover stock of at least 200gsm to protect the inner pages of perfect bound magazines and minimise the chance of tearing or bending for perfect bound magazines.
Add Lamination for a Long-Lasting Finish
So that your magazine stays looking good for longer, it’s a good idea to add lamination to the covers. This is especially important for perfect bound magazines to avoid cracking along the creases of the spine.
        Select the Right Paper Stock
For an all-round versatile choice, go for silk paper stock. It’s economical and strikes the perfect balance between vibrancy and readability. Colours, images, and adverts pop off the page without the overly reflective glare that can make large blocks of text hard to read.

        FAQs

        What is magazine printing?

Magazine printing is the process of producing multi-page publications that are professionally bound and printed on high-quality paper. Magazines are commonly used by publishers, businesses, schools and community organisations to share articles, news, advertising and features in a polished format.

At Bishops Printers, we produce magazines using high-precision litho presses for larger runs and HP Indigo digital presses for shorter runs, ensuring excellent colour quality and consistency.

What sizes are available for magazine printing?

The most common magazine sizes are A4 and A5, although bespoke formats are also possible.

        • A4 magazines are often used for commercial titles, corporate magazines and lifestyle publications.
        • A5 magazines are popular for community magazines, school publications and niche titles.

If you need a custom size or format, our team can help you choose a specification that works best for both production and mailing.

What is the best binding for magazines?

The best binding depends mainly on the page count and the look you want to achieve.

        Perfect binding
Ideal for thicker magazines and professional publications. Pages are glued into a square spine, giving the magazine a premium appearance.

        Saddle stitching (staple binding)
Best suited to thinner magazines with fewer pages. It is cost-effective, durable and perfect for newsletters, school magazines and community titles.

Our team can help you select the most suitable binding method based on your page count and budget.

What page counts work best for magazines?

Magazine page counts vary widely, but most publications fall within these ranges:

Perfect binding also requires a minimum spine width of around 3mm to ensure the glue holds securely.

What paper is best for printing magazines?

The most popular paper for magazine interiors is silk coated paper, as it offers the ideal balance between vibrant colours and comfortable readability.

        Other options include:

        • Gloss paper – ideal for image-heavy magazines
        • Uncoated paper – suitable for a more natural or editorial feel

For covers, we generally recommend 200–250gsm stock for durability and a more premium finish.

        Can you print short-run magazines?

Yes. We offer both short-run and high-volume magazine printing.

For smaller quantities, our HP Indigo digital presses provide exceptional print quality without the need for large print runs. This makes them ideal for:

        • Independent publishers
        • School magazines
        • Community publications
        • Pilot issues or limited editions
Can you print large-volume magazines for publishers?

Absolutely. Our Heidelberg litho presses are designed for high-volume production, delivering consistent colour, precision and efficiency for large magazine runs.

We print millions of magazines each year, and many publishers rely on us to meet demanding deadlines and maintain consistent quality issue after issue.

Can you help design my magazine as well as print it?

Yes. If you need help creating the design for your magazine, we can connect you with The Graphic Design House, the creative team that works alongside us at Bishops Printers.

They specialise in designing printed publications such as magazines, brochures and reports, so they understand how to structure pages, handle images and typography, and prepare artwork correctly for print.

Because the designers and print team work closely together, it helps avoid common issues with artwork setup and can make the whole process — from layout through to final printing — much smoother.

If you’d like support with the design of your magazine, just mention it when requesting your quote and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Can you mail magazines directly to readers?

Yes. Bishops Printers offers a complete print and mailing service through our in-house mailing facility, The Mailing People, located under a mile from our factory.

        We can handle:

        • Polywrapping
        • Paper wrapping
        • Envelope enclosing
        • Addressing and distribution

Keeping everything under one roof makes the process faster, more efficient and cost-effective.

What finishes can be added to magazine covers?

We offer a range of finishing options to enhance the look and durability of your magazine, including:

        • Matt lamination
        • Gloss lamination
        • Soft-touch lamination
        • Spot UV varnish
        • Foiling or embossing

These finishes can help your magazine stand out while protecting the cover during handling and mailing.

How long does magazine printing take?

Production times depend on factors such as page count, quantity, binding type and finishing options.

However, our large production capacity and experienced team allow us to handle tight schedules and last-minute changes. If you have a deadline approaching, our team can advise on the most efficient way to meet it.

Do you offer white-label magazine printing for trade customers?

Yes. Around 70% of our customers are trade print professionals, so we provide fully confidential white-label magazine printing services for agencies, designers and other printers.

This allows trade clients to deliver high-quality publications to their customers while protecting their own brand relationships.
