A good news story!

One of the most heart-breaking knock-on effects of COVID-19 for the frontline Intensive Care staff is the way PPE has put a barrier between them and the patients they care for. Where once a smiling face and the touch of a comforting hand were able to deliver reassurance and cheer, disturbing PPE masks, gloves and gowns have hidden faces, and professional identities.

Not even staff are able to tell who in their team is a doctor or a nurse, which in turn causes difficulty in an already stretched environment. Medical teams are having to scribble their names on aprons with marker pens, but these are difficult to read close up, let alone at a distance when you’re covered in PPE.

A hard to identify ICU nurse

Sometimes, it's the little things that make all the difference, and when they cost pennies not pounds you have to ask yourself - why not? That's what our sales manager was thinking when his wife came home from her ICU shift at Southampton General Hospital, and explained the frustration.

The next day, we produced 29,000 colour coded badges - red for doctors, yellow for ICU nurses, green for other nursing staff and white for cleaners. This meant key information could be conveyed immediately, accurately and at a distance. The badges were pre-printed with job titles with space below for staff members to write their own name in marker pen, along with whatever customisation they wanted - from smiley faces to departmental identifiers.

The result was transformative. Staff and patients were so appreciative and absolutely delighted.

While it will largely be cutting edge R&D that eventually delivers us out of the COVID-19 pandemic, it's reassuring to know that good old print and paper technology also has its part to play in putting the humanity back into an inhuman situation.

Throughout the COVID-19 crisis we have been working directly with hospitals, and via our trade print partners, to quickly supply a wide range of low cost printed materials including:

  • Critical care forms
  • Inpatient prescription & administration charts
  • Risk assessment & care plans
  • A4 social distancing signage for lifts and stairwells
  • Information leaflets
  • Self-adhesive badges

Whether you know exactly what you want, or you simply have a problem that you think might be fixed using print, we'd like to help if we can - whatever business sector you belong to.
